My name is Shane McCullough (they/them she/her). I am a 23-year-old interdisciplinary artist born and raised in Kansas City. My work explores themes of Gender, self-realization, and community. Through the use of digital and traditional mediums such as digital collage, typography, physical cut paper, and mixed-media collage I aim to explore the intricacies and fluidity of gender, identity, and community. My work is influenced by artists such as Kate Gibb, Shepard Fairey, The Guerrilla Girls, Basquiat, Keith Haring, Franziska Barczyk, Barbara Kruger, Morning Breath (Doug Cunningham and Jason Noto), and Aesthetic Apparatus (founded by Michael Byzewski).
Alternative subcultures have fascinated me for as long as I can remember. Specifically, Punk, Hardcore, Metal, and Rock, these influences have inevitably seeped into my visual language. The DIY mentality of Punk and Hardcore has led me to use found images, up-cycled materials, and reworking second-hand clothing. The aesthetics of Punk and Hardcore have also influenced my distressed, gritty, and texturized imagery. As for my color, it is influenced by queercore aesthetics.
Through my art, I aim to promote dialogue, and connection and foster a sense of community across diverse backgrounds and perspectives. Art has the power to engage people in important conversations, challenge preconceived notions, and inspire action. With this in mind, I strive to create work that is inclusive, accessible, and thought-provoking. My ultimate goal is to use my art to effect positive change in the world and contribute to a more just and sustainable future.
As these communities profoundly impacted my life, my favorite projects are band merchandising and gig posters. other projects I enjoy working on are Branding, visual identities, packaging design, typography, hand-lettering, print media, murals, and fine art collages. As a freelancer, I hope to create genuine connections and partnerships with clients to create potent and effective projects.
